Proxmox VE and Ceph infrastructure audit
Infrastructure audit for Proxmox VE, Ceph and ZFS, before migration or in production. Two or three days, read-only collection, report and costed action plan, follow-up reviews at 1, 2 and 3 months. 750 EUR excl. tax per day.
Proxmox VE and Ceph audit.
We collect data read-only. Nothing is changed.
Hardware, network, Ceph, ZFS, backups: everything is checked.
Each finding is ranked by severity.
A prioritised, costed action plan.
We check back at 1, 2 and 3 months.
You know where you stand, and what to fix first.
Answers to your questions
Is your virtualisation infrastructure built to current practice? What are the short-term risks? What has to be fixed to get back to that standard? Our audit answers those three questions, with evidence.
The most common trigger is migrating away from VMware, when you want to check that a cluster is stable, confirm that everything is in place, or simply refresh your own picture of it. A Proxmox cluster running for two years deserves the same look: refreshing the documentation, reassuring the team, or making day-to-day operations more reliable.
What the audit examines
Hardware and room
Models, ECC memory, redundant power supplies, racks, environment.
Network
Cabling and labelling, bonds that actually aggregate, optical modules, error counters, VLANs and MTU.
Proxmox VE cluster
Quorum, corosync rings, versions, high availability, declared storage.
Ceph
Health, CRUSH rules, size and min_size, data placement, fill level, balance across OSDs.
ZFS
vdev layout, redundancy, usage, scrubs, deduplication, cache.
Disks
Enterprise or consumer grade, power-loss protection, SMART wear, reallocated sectors.
Backup
Declared jobs, whether they actually complete, off-cluster destination, restores tested or not.
Operations and recovery
Existing documentation, dependency on a single person, disaster recovery plan and how credible it is.
Two or three days, tailored to you
- 1
Day 1, analysis
Collection and analysis of the data. The collection is always read-only, systems are never modified. Full transparency on what runs.
- 2
Day 2, on-site visit, optional
Rack walk, camera in hand: cabling, labelling, power, environment, and interviews with the operations team. Discover, compare, reassure.
- 3
Performance measurements, optional
On written request, once approved, on your terms. Storage and network performance analysis.
- 4
Day 3, debrief
Findings shared with the technical team before release, then the report and action plan are handed over.
Analysis and debrief form the core of our audit.
The optional visit is often what surfaces the real risks, and where we start reducing them together.
Pricing
Core, analysis and debrief
1,500 EUR excl. taxTwo days. Mandatory, this is the smallest assignment that produces a decision.
With the on-site visit
2,250 EUR excl. taxThree days. Cabling, labelling and the room itself cannot be read remotely.
Follow-up review, at 1, 2 or 3 months
375 EUR excl. tax eachHalf a day each, kept or dropped individually. All three plus the visit: 3,375 EUR excl. tax.
Day rate of 750 EUR excluding tax, travel billed at cost beyond fifty kilometres from Vannes.
Deliverables
Technical record
An eighteen-tab workbook recording the facts, figure by figure, with the evidence next to each line.
Audit report
Findings ranked by severity, and our auditor opinion.
Action plan
Prioritised, with an estimated effort per fix, to make the workload easier to quantify.
Cut-over conditions
The closed list of what must be fixed before migrating away from the original environment, where relevant.
Delivered within ten working days of the collection.
Reviews at 1, 2 and 3 months
We run fresh measurements and consolidate the existing data, to show what has changed and identify what still needs work, where relevant. Each review produces a written summary and a call.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a Proxmox audit cost?
The core, analysis and debrief, is 1,500 EUR excluding tax. With the on-site visit, 2,250 EUR. Follow-up reviews are 375 EUR each. Our day rate is 750 EUR excluding tax, the same as for our other one-off assignments, and travel is billed at cost beyond fifty kilometres from Vannes.
Can the audit disrupt production?
The collection is read-only and changes nothing: it runs the same commands an operator types to look at the state of their cluster. Performance measurements, which do write, are optional, subject to your written agreement, and run inside a virtual machine you provide, outside production hours.
Do we need a migration under way to justify an audit?
No. Leaving VMware is the most common trigger, but an audit is just as useful on a Proxmox cluster that has been running for two years, before a hardware refresh, after an incident, or simply because nobody can say any more whether the backups complete.
What if we run ZFS rather than Ceph?
The scope covers both, and a mixed cluster is handled in a single assignment. The method is identical: what changes is the collection commands and the analysis thresholds.
We have no operations documentation. Is that a blocker?
It is usually the first finding in the report. The audit requires no prior documentation: it records what exists, and a missing recovery procedure is a fact the report states like any other.
What happens after the debrief?
The action plan is yours, to carry out in-house or with us. Reviews at 1, 2 and 3 months measure what has changed on three points: storage state and disk wear, whether backup jobs complete, and performance compared with the initial measurement.
Do you travel across France?
Yes. Analysis and debrief are done remotely from Vannes, in Brittany. The visit day is scheduled on site, primarily in Brittany and western France, Rennes, Nantes, Lorient, Saint-Brieuc, but we work anywhere in France. Travel is billed at cost beyond fifty kilometres from Vannes.
